Getting started with Triggers

7/30/2021

Triggers are the circumstances you wish the tag to fire under. You can have multiple triggers to a tag, and a trigger can be used on multiple different tags.

Triggers
A trigger is a set of instructions for which a tag will or won't fire upon. You can get very creative here, by creating triggers which will fire depending on what page your user is visiting, what they're clicking on, if they can see a specific element on the page and so much more.

You can add multiple instructions to a single trigger, use multiple triggers on a single tag, and even use triggers in reverse by setting them as an exception on a tag.

Click on Triggering, this will display the existing triggers, click the plus button to create a new trigger.

Let’s start by creating a trigger for the external links only. Rename your new trigger and click on Trigger Configuration to choose your trigger type. For this type of event, we want a trigger that will activate when a user clicks on any links that do not begin with the same hostname as the website the event is being fired on.

Select Just Links from the trigger type list, the toggle to Some Link Clicks. From the first dropdown, select Click URL, and from the second dropdown select does not contain. Then type the website name into the text box provided.
